Surging oil prices, increasing environmental awareness, growing imports of oil and un-utilized resources of renewable energy are the key driving factors to promote renewable energy worldwide. However, the up-front costs of solar and wind systems create a large hurdle for most third world needs. Most of the equipment required for solar and wind power generation is still imported from U.S., Europe or Japan. While many countries provides exemption on import duty and sales tax for imported renewable energy equipment, the total cost of acquisition and installation still works out to be high in comparison to other non-renewable options. In addition, the lack of awareness about this technology pushes up the cost for aftermarket services. Thus, there is substantial opportunity for establishment of domestic production facilities for solar panels, chargers, batteries and inverters, which will reduce the price and in effect stimulate the demand.
